A priest accused of sexually assaulting a minor inside a Philadelphia church 15 years ago surrendered to authorities Thursday night. Father Andrew McCormick turned himself into police at the Special Victims Unit Thursday night. According to investigators, Fr. McCormick is charged with seven counts of sexual assault from an alleged incident in 1997 that involved a 10-year-old male. At the time, Fr. McCormick was a priest and in charge of the altar boy program at St. John Cantius Church in Bridesburg. He then went to St. Bede the Venerable Parish in Holland (Bucks County). Since 2004, Fr. McCormick has been the pastor at Sacred Heart Church in Swedesburg, Pennsylvania. Fr. McCormick was named in a 2011 Grand Jury report and was one of 26 priests that was placed on leave by then Archbishop of Philadelphia Cardinal Justin Rigali. His case has been moved to the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. He has been charged with Indecent Sexual Assault, Statutory Sexual Assault, Sexual Assault, Indecent Assault, Indecent Exposure, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Corruption of a Minor.

A Washington, DC-based organization that represents the transit industry is naming SEPTA the best large transit system in North America. American Public Transportation Association president Michael Melaniphy says APTA looked at both subjective and objective data. APTA also looked at SEPTA customer service surveys, environmental standards, its large fleet of hybrid buses, and financial management, leading to the selection of SEPTA as the best among more than 60 transit agencies of similar size.

A 25-year-old man from the Logan section of the city is accused of animal cruelty for tossing cats and kittens into the air at his Chinese restaurant. Philadelphia police were conducting an investigation when they found a surveillance video allegedly showing Yu Zhen abusing cats at his restaurant, in the 4900 block of Old York Road. George Bengal, director of law enforcement for the Pennsylvania SPCA, says Zhen is accused of animal cruelty and could face additional charges. “He was using these cats to juggle — one female adult cat and four kittens. He was taking the kittens and juggling the kittens up in the air, taking them by the tail and just throwing them around, and using all the kittens as bowling balls across the back patio." If convicted, he could face thousands of dollars in fines and jail time.
