Camden Police Dismantling, Kensington Factory Collapse, PHA Worker Jailed On Extortion

For two years, Camden's worked on plans to shake up the police force and create the Camden Metro Police Division, which would be run by the county. Last night the Mayor said a police layoff plan will be filed by the end of the month to fastrack the process. All 270 current officers could lose their jobs by the end of 2012, although the mayor says all will be eligible for almost 400 estimated new positions. The police union is considering legal action.

Three floors and the roof of an abandoned Kensington factory collapsed crushing two vehicles in a rear lot, but luckily not falling onto any nearby streets or homes. Heavy equipment is now demolishing what’s left of the building and lifting up rubble, enabling firefighters in a bucket truck to search to make sure no one had been trapped in the collapse. City officials say despite the condition of the building, they never received a single 3-1-1 call from neighbors complaining about the building. They say if you’ve got a dangerous building in your neighborhood, call the city immediately.

A former Philadelphia Housing Authority worker will spend more than four years in prison for extorting $25,000 in kickbacks from two contractors. Federal prosecutors say Kerri Bizzell was sentenced Wednesday to 50 months in prison. She also pleaded guilty to obstruction for trying to hide the kickbacks from a grand jury. Bizzell managed small renovation contracts for the authority.
