Sliced Apple Recall, Bank Robbery in Abington Twp, Hoarders Die While Pet Birds Survive Fire

Sliced apples distributed to fast-food and grocery chains nationwide are among packaged products being recalled due to possible listeria contamination. Listeria was found on equipment used to produce apple products by Missa Bay. Packaged apple slices distributed to McDonald's and Burger King are included in the recall as are packaged food containing apples distributed to Wawa and Wegman's. Recalled products have use-by dates of July 8 through Aug. 20th.

An Abington Township police officer was hospitalized and an alleged bank robber is in custody after a car chase that began in Jenkintown, wound all over Philadelphia and ended in a collision. Abington Township Deputy Police Chief John Livingood said a man went into the PNC Bank at 123 Old York Road, tossed a plastic bag on the teller's counter, and said: "Fill it up." No threats were made, no note was shown, and no bank employees were injured.

Police and firemen who responded to a house fire in Chester County this morning found two elderly hoarders dead amid the ruins of their cluttered home. But in the screened-in porch behind the house were chirping sounds - the voices of 17 pet birds. Rescuers found lovebirds and parakeets that had survived due to a door separating the porch from the smoky house. The birds were taken by animal rescuers to the Chester County SPCA for evaluation.

Weather
Scattered Thunderstorms tonight. Low 73 in Philadelphia.
