A planned memorial service for Philadelphia native and actor Sherman Hemsley set for Thursday has been canceled. Hemsley is best know for his roles in 1970's sitcoms All in the Family and The Jeffersons.

The memorial service was scheduled to be held at the Deliverance Evangelistic Church in North Philadelphia at 11 am, Thurs. 8/16. The church confirmed that it was canceled, but there is no explanation for this cancellation or if it might be rescheduled. Relatives of Mr. Hemsley were organizing the service, and his cousin, Rev. Michael Wells was to deliver a euolgy and assist Deliverance pastors.

Hemsley was born in 1938 and grew up in South Philadelphia, raised by his mother, who worked at a lamp factory. He attended Barrat Middle School, Central High School for 9th Grade and Bok Technical High School for 10th. He dropped out of high school to join the Air Force and served for 4 years. On his return to Philadelphia from the service his worked for the Post Office while studying at the Academy of Dramatic Arts at night. He eventually moved to New York, working at the Post Office during the day and on stage at night. He was lured off the stage for the bit role of "George Jefferson" in All in the Family.

Hemsley passed away on July 24 at his home in El Paso, TX. He was 74.
