Philadelphia School Partnership raises $50 Million; Lennon's Killer Denied Parole for 7th Time

Mark David Chapman has been denied parole for the 7th time after a hearing in front of a three member board on Wednesday. Chapman was sentenced in 1981 to 20 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. Chapman shot and killed former Beatle John Lennon outside his New York Apartment building, the Dakota, in December 1980. Chapman had hoped to gain fame and notoriety by committing the act, but later admitted his mistake. Lennon was 40 years old. The probation board noted some positive improvements in Chapman's prison life such as good behavior and program completion, however, pointed to the heinous nature of his crime and objections from the outside as reasons for denial. He is eligible again in 2 years.

The Philadelphia School Partnership has raised half of the $100 million fundraising goal it set when they began two years ago. The nonprofit was established to help high-performing schools of any type, whether they are public, private, or charter. The intital funding has come from a broad range of donors and sources including corporations, individuals, and foundations. The money is going into PSP's Great Schools Fund which will help support creating seats in strong performing schools to replace those in underperforming ones.

Tonight, partly cloudy with temperatures in the 70's this evening in Philadelphia.
