Hybrid Nor'easter/Hurricane Sandy Setting Sights on Philadelphia region for early next week.

It's still quite a few days away but weather forecasters are already becoming spooked by a potential monster storm right before Halloween next week. Hurricane Sandy is still churning away in the Caribbean but will begin to move up the East Coast over the next few days. Combine that with a cold front with arctic air moving down from Canada and an early winter storm sliding in from out west, there is a high potential for a powerful collision of weather forces. This all has the potential to produce gale-force winds, flooding, heavy rain, and even snow in some places.

This hybrid winter storm / hurricane will be much different than last year's Halloween snow. That was just an early snow storm, and even though it caused a lot of power outages due to leaves being on trees laden with wet snow, it wasn't a powerful storm. This storm will hit during the full moon and the storm surge could cause wide spread flooding along coastal areas. Rain will be particularly heavy because of the clash of air masses (tropical and arctic) and winds will be high.

On Wednesday Government scientists put the likelihood that the storm would hit the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast at 70%, but areas from North Carolina to Nova Scotia will be affected. They are looking at the peak for this storm to be early on Tuesday. Hopefully this is just forecasters rattling their chains and this storm will push off to sea. Of course, the closer we get to next week the better the forecasting models will become.
