Hurricane Sandy A Threat, PENNDOT Ready For Sandy,Coroner Says Indian Grandmother's Death A Homicide

Sandy is hitting the Bahamas as a Category 1 Hurricane with 90 m.p.h. winds. The majority of the hurricane models have Sandy making landfall along or close to the Jersey Shore as a Category 1 storm. The main threat to our area is torrential rain (6-8+ inches), flooding, hurricane force winds (at the shore), hurricane gusts inland, and power outages. If this storm hits the Jersey Shore straight on, it would be a first. Some residents would lose power for weeks, maybe a month.

A 61-year-old Indian woman found slain in a suburban Philadelphia apartment where she was babysitting her granddaughter while visiting her family died of cuts to her neck and chest, a coroner said Thursday. The 10-month old girl remains missing. Authorities on Thursday said they are increasing the award for information leading to the baby’s safe return to $50,000. Police issued an Amber alert on Monday following the discovery of her paternal grandmother’s body at the apartment complex.

PennDOT is already preparing for Sandy and the threat it poses to the region patrolling the roadways across the region to clear drainage inlets of leaves, tree limbs, trash and debris. That’s being done to prevent flooding on the highways in the event of heavy rain. There was some concern that with a cold blast of air coming from the West, a collision with Sandy could have spawned a snowstorm. That’s not looking likely.
