Long Beach Island Reopens Short-Term, Nor'easter Coming, Phila School Performance Index Review

Long Beach Island opened today to some residents for the first time since Hurricane Sandy. Cars started lining up on Route 72 at 4 am. Residents are permitted back on LBI from 7 am to 3 pm except in Holgate and North Beach because of unsafe conditions in those towns. There'll be no access at the Route 72 check point after 12pm. Homeowners are grabbing their valuables, cleaning to avoid mold growth, and assessing damage. Many homes have be condemned and those that survived sustained substantial damage from the storm. Authorities will mostly likely not let people back on LBI until Saturday.

Another storm is rumbling up the Atlantic and will likely impact the Jersey shore on Wednesday. Gusts up to 55 miles per hour are powering this classic Nor'easter. Nowhere near the strength or size of Sandy, a storm with any punch will hurt a shoreline weakened by last week's hurricane. The Lehigh Valley and Poconos could get some snow from the Nor'easter.

The Philadelphia School District is looking for outside help to fix its school rating system - the School Performance Index (SPI). The 1 to 10 rating scale was designed to allow parents to compare schools, however it has also been used to determine schools to be overhauled or closed. A recent review found internal mistakes in how test scores and other data calculated the SPI.

Sports
The Eagles play the New Orleans Saints tonight.

Weather
Mix of Sun and Clouds today. 48 in Philadelphia.
