Chemical Plant Fire in Doylestown, Casino Neighbors Organize, Charter School Plan Criticized

A three alarm fire erupted this morning around 5:30 a.m. at a chemical plant in Doylestown. The P&R Industries chemical plant is on the 3800 block of Old Easton Road near the Doylestown Airport. The 55,500-square-foot Arbonite Coating & Lining building is just northwest of the airport. Hazardous materials response teams were on the scene. The plant makes an industrial protective coating called Arbonite, used to line the insides of tankers that protect against corrosion. The fire was contained at 8:15 a.m.

With a new casino on the horizon for Philadelphia, neighbors are organizing near one of the proposed sites. Neighbors of the proposed Provence casino backed by Bart Blatstein, have formed the North Broad Community Coalition to advance their interests. They want any development along North Broad to nurture, rather than squash the momentum of the neighborhood.

The decision to control charter school growth is being blasted by the Pennsylvania Coalition of Public Charter Schools. The Philadelphia School Reform Commission suspended part of state law and could face legal challenges as a result. The SRC suspended a section of the school code that prevents districts from capping charter enrollment.
