Train Derailment Spills Chemical, Philly Police Officer Collapses, Camden to Dissolve Police Dept

A train derailed this morning around 7 a.m. spilling chemicals in Paulsboro, New Jersey. Part of a bridge collapsed over the Mantua Creek and several cars are in the water below. Hazmat crews are on the scene at the Marine Terminal, the site of the accident. The U.S. Coast Guard has also been called in because chemicals appear to be leaking into the Delaware River. More than a dozen people near the scene have reported trouble breathing. The train was carrying Vinyl chloride which is used in the making of plastics. Vinyl chloride does dissolve in water, but when it gets into the air it can cause respiratory and eye irritation in people.

A Philadelphia police officer is in critical condition after being rescued by fellow officers early this morning in Logan. 31 year old officer Michael Gwynn apparently lost consciousness while struggling with a suspect. A civilian called 911 and police responded to 7th and Loudon Streets where they found Gwynn unconscious and his heart stopped, but still holding onto the suspect. CPR was administered and Gwynn was taken to Einstein.

Camden Mayor Dana Redd is laying out plans today to dissolve the City police department and replace it with a County run police force. If approved by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission, all 270 members of the force will be laid off. The county wide police force would then be increased to a 400 member department.
