Mummer Warehouse Fire, SEAL Killed from PA, Nutter Pitches Obama Plan

A fire broke out this afternoon in South Philadelphia at the storage location for the Fralinger String Band. The four alarm blaze started about 2 this afternoon where Fralinger stores its props at 2nd and Wharton Streets. Dozens of firefighters were called in to bring the blaze under control. At least one injury was reported and a wall has collapsed during the fire, which is still under investigation.

The US Navy SEAL killed during a mission in Afghanistan to free an American doctor was from Pennsylvania. Petty Officer 1st Class Nicolas D. Checque of Monroeville, PA was a member of the special warfare team that freed Dr. Dilip Joseph of Colorado Springs from Taliban captivity. Officer Checque was 28 years old and the Associated Press is reporting he was also a member of the same unit that killed Osama bin Laden.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter joined other Pennsylvania Democratic Mayors today on a conference call to promote the White House pitch to keep funding many services as the country approaches the looming fiscal cliff. If the scheduled funding cuts go into effect after the holidays, city services would be cut including foreclosure assistance programs and staffing in city schools.
