Philadelphia School Closings; Christmas Package Thieves Arrested; Mob Ties in South Philly Murder

Philadelphia School District Superintendent William Hite is expected to make a major announcement tomorrow, Thursday at 2 p.m., regarding the future of as many as 37 public schools in Philadelphia. See list of schools Hite wants to close or consolidate schools due to budget cuts. At a town hall meeting on Wednesday he said that whatever happens tomorrow it is long overdue, but he “did not come here just to close schools but to improve the educational environment.” The closings and consolidation recommendation is driven by large budget cuts and the inability to carry any more empty seats in schools going forward. The plan reportedly involves 22 elementary schools, four middle schools and 11 high schools. Some schools mentioned include: University City High School, Germantown High School, Strawberry Mansion High School, Bok Technical High School, and the Paul Robeson High School merging with Sayre High School. Parents United for Public Education have already issued a statement opposing the closings and the entire process asking for more disclosure, transparency, and public input. The purported plan will save the Philadelphia School District $30 million.

Two arrests have been made in a Christmas present theft in Bucks County. Nicole Frye, 30, and Bryan Reppert, 37, both of Comly Road in Philadelphia, are charged with theft, receiving stolen property and conspiracy. The pair have also been implicated in similar thefts in Northeast Philadelphia. Frye was recognized after surveillance video of the theft was broadcast. On Monday in Feasterville, PA, the victim's home security system captured video of Frye walking up the porch steps and taking a package left by UPS moments before. Frye retreated back to the car and took off. The package contained 2 pairs of Prada sneakers worth $250 each. Police say this kind of theft is becoming popular as the holiday season winds up and more people shop online year after year. They either follow FedEx/UPS trucks and scoop up packages behind the deliveries or drive through neighborhoods looking for boxes on doorsteps. You can protect yourself by following the tracking number and making sure someone is there to pick up the package when it arrives.

The murder of a South Philly man Wednesday afternoon leads to the questioning of an alleged mob associate, Anthony Nicodemo of the Joseph Ligambi crime family. Police were called to the 2800 block of Iseminger Street in South Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon to investigate a murder. Gino DiPietro was getting in his pickup truck when he was shot to death around 3 p.m. Witnesses said the shooter left in a black SUV and license plates that led them to Nicodemo. Nicodemo was taken into custody for questioning. Joseph "Uncle Joe" Ligambi is currently on trial for racketeering.
