Garrett Reid Had Vials of Steroids at Lehigh, District Attorney Concludes Case, No Source for Heroin

Last summer, Andy Reid's son Garrett was found dead in the Lehigh University dorm room he was using during Philadelphia Eagles training camp. Police were called at 7:20 on the morning of August 5th. It was determined that Garrett died of a heroin overdose, however, police also found 19 vials of unknown substances, 47 syringes and 64 needles in Reid's room. Today, Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli held a press conference about the case and those vials.

The vials contained four different types of “strong” steroids, one of which was pure testosterone. The investigation could not determine the source of the steroids or the heroin that killed Reid, but did note the steroids were not related to his death. They also do not have any evidence that Garrett was distributing the steroids. This will conclude the investigation by Lehigh University Police.

Garrett Reid was working as a member of the Strength and Conditioning team during the Eagles' camp when he was found dead. He has a long history of substance abuse and trouble with the law, but from all accounts was recovering from his past. He was 29.

Eagles' Head Coach Andy Reid issued this statement:

“As you all know, my son Garrett battled addiction for many years. While there were some victories along the way, it ultimately was a battle that he lost and that cost him his life. Our family feels the pain of that loss every day.

“Today’s report saddens me greatly, but only confirms the troubles Garrett encountered in the final years of his life. As parents, we were encouraged by his apparent progress but, like many addicts, he was able to conceal the signs of relapse.

“Jeffrey Lurie, the Eagles organization and the people of Philadelphia have been remarkably supportive of my family throughout our ordeal. I am confident that my son’s decisions did not affect our football team in any way. I cannot apologize enough for any adverse appearances that my son’s actions may have for an organization and a community that has been nothing but supportive of our family.”
