Threat Closes Emmaus H.S., School Closures Disappoint Hamels Foundation, Newtown Moment Of Silence

A high school in eastern Pennsylvania will be closed Friday after officials received a bomb threat. Emmaus High School made the announcement in an automated call to parents on Thursday. The school also announced the closure on its website. All other buildings in the East Penn School District will remain open.

Among the 37 schools on the Philadelphia School District’s closure list are several that received big grants from Phillies’ pitcher Cole Hamels’ foundation. The Hamels Foundation has issued a statement saying it is “disappointed” to learn of the closing plan, and that while its goal of supporting education in the community will not change, a January meeting with the district will help the foundation in discerning its direction in the future.

Connecticut governor Malloy requested that governors across the country join Connecticut residents in a moment of reflection on Friday to honor the victims of the mass school shooting in Newtown, Pennsylvania governor Tom Corbett asked that a moment of silence be taken in Pennsylvania, that he will host at a ceremony today at 9:15am. New Jersey governor Christie signed an executive order asking that all New Jerseyans take a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. on Friday. Both governors ordered that state buildings fly flags at half-staff to mourn the victims of this tragedy.
