Y-Not Radio to Join iRadioPhilly Online Radio Group

Beginning Friday February 1st, Y-Not Radio, an online Indie Rock radio station with roots reaching back to the original Y100 (WPLY-FM 100.3), will join iRadioPhilly, a group of diverse online radio stations serving Philadelphia. Y-Not Radio will be heard online at the website www.iRadioPhilly.com and on the FREE iRadioPhilly iPhone and Android Apps with other online content residing at www.YNotRadio.net.

Led by former Y100 DJ and Promotion Director, Josh T. Landow, Y-Not Radio features emerging new artists from Philadelphia and the national music scene. In a format known as "Indie Rock" Y-Not Radio is the place to hear new artists like Alt-J, Tame Impala, and Django Django, alongside great up and coming Philadelphia bands like Bleeding Rainbow, DRGN KING, and GANG. Indie Rock stations are frequently the first stations to support upcoming new artists with airplay, exposing a wealth of great new music to an audience who wants something different from what mainstream radio offers.

According to Landow, "All of us at Y-Not Radio are looking forward to entering into this partnership with iRadioPhilly. I'm really impressed with the group of radio stations that they have created to serve a variety of audiences in Philadelphia. To be able to bring Y-Not's legacy and unique blend of indie rock to this platform will surely increase the reach of a format that has no other professionally curated and hosted radio station in this city, so rich with independent music. Ultimately this is a team-up that will benefit indie rock artists, both local and national, as well as music lovers always looking for new favorites."

In 1995, WPLY-FM at 100.3 introduced Philadelphia to the sound of Modern Rock. Y100 competed with WDRE-FM in the format until 1997 when WDRE was sold to Radio One which changed the format to Hip-Hop, leaving Y100 alone in the Modern Rock format in Philadelphia. With the change, many WDRE staff members moved to Y100, including program director Jim McGuinn, Landow’s mentor and longtime associate.

In 2005, Radio One changed Y100’s format leaving Philadelphia one of the few major markets without a station playing the popular modern rock format. Y100 Program Director, Jim McGuinn along with Josh T. Landow launched an online version of the former station calling it "Y100 Rocks." In 2006 McGuinn and Landow partnered with WXPN to put a "Y-Rock" program on the air at night. Y-Rock also continued with a 24/7 internet stream for lovers of the modern sounds of Indie Rock.

In 2010, when WXPN stopped carrying Y-Rock, Josh T. Landow along with music director Joey O. and a staff of approximately 20 volunteer DJs re-formed as an independent online radio station, taking the name Y-Not Radio from Y100’s long running new and local music program. Now, Y-Not, still fully owned and programmed by Landow, will become part of a group of unique new stations serving Philadelphia called iRadioPhilly.

iRadioPhilly is a new, locally owned group of 20 unique music stations that feature Philadelphia news, sports and weather updates as well as live broadcasts from concerts and events around the city. iRadioPhilly also carries the live broadcasts of Saint Joseph’s Men’s Basketball games. The menu of stations on iRadioPhilly also includes Classical music, Jazz, Top 40, Classic Rock, Oldies, Country, Adult Alternative, Hip-Hop, and a station dedicated exclusively to the music of Philadelphia area artists and bands. iRadioPhilly plans to expand its content offerings and attract local business sponsors for its programming.

In addition to its standard daytime mix of indie rock, Y-Not Radio's evening and weekend specialty programming includes shows like Britspotting (featuring indie rock from the UK), Noise Complaint (punk rock), Y-Not Internacional (indie rock from all over the world), Y-Not Philly (locals only), Transmission (indie electronic and dance music), Rodney Anonymous Tells You How To Live (industrial and goth music hosted by the frontman of the legendary Dead Milkmen), and The Y-Not Session Shuffle (featuring a mix of live recordings from over the years going back into the archives of classic Y100 and WDRE Sonic Sessions).
