Jack White has been crowned Record Store Day 2013 Ambassador, handed the vinyl-crafted torch by last year's ambassador, Iggy Pop. Record Store Day is one day out of the year dedicated to local independent music and record stores. In celebration, participating record stores throughout the country release limited edition albums, give away prizes, and embrace the special format of vinyl. Bands and artists make albums specifically for Record Store Day, this year Pavement's Stephen Malkmus is exclusively releasing an album-length cover of German prog-rock Can's 1972 album Ege Bamyasi.

In Jack White's press release he passionately promotes the human and in-person discovery of the arts and music: "How can record shops (or any shop for that matter) compete with Netflix, TiVo, video games that take months to complete, cable, texting, the Internet, etc. etc? Getting out of your chair at home to experience something in the real world has started to become a rare occurrence, and to a lot of people, an unnecessary one. The world hasn't stopped moving. Out there, people are still talking to each other face-to-face, exchanging ideas and turning each other on. Art houses are showing films, people are drinking coffee and telling tall tales, women and men are confusing each other and record stores are selling discs full of soul that you haven't felt yet. Let's wake each other up"

Also to promote Record Store Day, a video has been released featuring Jack White showcasing United Record Pressing, a record manufacturing company positioned in Nashville, Tennessee. Record Store Day celebrates its 6th year of operation on Saturday, April 20th 2013.

Magic Slim, an influential, authentic, and avid Chicago-blues guitar player passed away last night in a hospital here in Philadelphia. Being born Morris Holt in Torrance, Mississippi in 1937, Magic’s first music venture was the piano then onward to guitar. The Delta-blues were prevalent during this time and was a burgeoning sound of the area. Magic and his backing band, the Teardrops were acclaimed to be the no-holds-barred brand of Chicago-style electric blues, led by his singing and guitar playing. Magic and the Teardrops won blues band of the year at the 2003 Blues Music Awards, and his latest release featured real-deal delta-blues covers.

Philadelphia Hip-Hip duo OCD: Moosh and Twist's headlining show last Friday was cancelled and called off just moments before heading to the stage at the Union Transfer. This comes just under two months after their show at the First Unitarian Church, which was interrupted and cut short by a false fire alarm pulled by an attendee. The event at the intersection of 10th and Spring Garden at the Union Transfer was shut down due to rowdiness and excessive underage drinking by attendees. According to the manager of Moosh & Twist, there were fights within the first five minutes of the doors opening.

"People were urinating on neighboring buildings, fights continued to break out, it was an all around chaotic scene. I was notified that the show was being shut down as the cops arrived. At that point there was absolutely nothing that could be done. Overall, it was due to multiple incidents of ticket holders acting irresponsibly that became a threat to the venue and forced Union Transfer to shut down." R5 Productions' Sean Agnew said there were "school buses" of kids already intoxicated, leading to individuals getting thrown out before the show even started. "With the doors only open for a few minutes, we were already tossing out kids left and right," Agnew said. "After discussing it with all parties we decided it was best to postpone the show before any serious incidents happened." As the saying goes, better safe than sorry!
