Philadelphia Students Rally Against School Budget Cuts

About 300 people, primarily high school students, rallied outside School District headquarters and marched to City Hall to protest against expected education budget cuts and to demand arts and music programs are saved.

After gathering at the district headquarters at 440 N. Broad Street, the demonstrators, including marching band members in uniform, made their way to Dilworth Plaza where they staged a second rally that included performances showcasing the talents of some city students.

To close a $629 million gap in funding, the district seems fated to dramatically cut staff and services.

Some note 60% of every property tax dollar collected goes to schools. Half a billion dollars in overdue property taxes is owed the city. This is the result of a Mayor who put a moratorium on sheriff sales, and set up property tax "amnesty" so that people don't have to pay their bills in full. Schools suffer disproportionately from poor property tax collection.
