Pope Francis started his first day in prayer and a planned Mass with the Cardinals at the Sistene Chapel. Here in America, Latinos are celebrating the first Latino Pope. He is the first pontiff from the America’s and the first from outside Europe in a thousand years. Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput is calling the selection of Pope Francis I a “wonderful choice.”

SEPTA fares will increase this summer. It’s the first hike in the base cash fare since 2001. Cash fares on city busses, subways and trolleys will go from $2 to $2.25 on July 1st, then to $2.50 next year. Tokens will rise $1.55 to $1.80, weekly transpasses go from $22 to $24.50 and monthly passes from $83 to $92.

A grand jury has charged 8 people in a Pay to Play scheme involving the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. It includes former Senate Democratic leader Robert J. Mellow, former Turnpike Commission Chairman Mitchell Rubin, and onetime turnpike CEO Joseph Brimmeier. Crimes range from bribery to bid-rigging. Attorney General Kathleen Kane depicted a scheme in which everyone but taxpayers and toll-payers benefited.
