Archdiocese: Girls Play Football, Mayor Nutter Booed Off Stage, Another Teacher Guilty at Triton

It is a new era. Boys and girls can play on the same football team. That’s the word from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. After a request from a sixth grade girl from Doylestown, Caroline Pla, the Catholic Youth Organization says it will allow co-ed football. The Archdiocese considered feedback from parents, pastors, players, sports medicine experts. Archbishop Chaput has given the girls the thumbs up.

Mayor Nutter got booed off the stage today, unable to complete his budget address due to a huge, vocal protest in City Council Chambers. The mayor stopped and started a couple of times but the protesters screamed at ear-piercing levels. The protest was from unionized city workers who disagree with the mayor’s plan to cut benefits packages.

Now four teachers have pleaded guilty in connection with inappropriate relationships with students. Former South Jersey Triton High School teacher Nick Martinelli pleaded guilty to hindering apprehension, admitting impeding the investigation of fellow teachers by telling a victim to stay quiet about it. Two other teachers will be sentenced this week.

Weather
Partly cloudy, cold tonight. 28 in Center City.
