Gov. Christie Announces Gun Plan; Second Child Dies for Prayer Healers; Philly Runners Show Support

Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey announced a plan to help curb gun violence. His plan comes after receiving a report from a blue ribbon task force he created to examine gun violence and its causes after the Newtown, CT shootings. The plan includes expanding government-funded mental health treatment, requiring a parental sign-off before children can buy or rent violent video games, and mandating that an ID presented by would-be gun-owners be government-issued. He also recommends banning sale of Barrett 50-caliber semi-automatic sniper rifles, introducing bail reforms that would make it harder for people suspected of violent gun crimes to be released, and adding provisions to make it easier for courts and health care professionals to involuntarily commit people they consider violent to a psychiatric hospital. The plan did not address classroom security or magazine capacity. Christie said that just having laws restricting guns purchases, appropriately enforcing gun laws, and aggressively punishing criminals is not enough. “This is about violence control. In order to deal with the kind of violence we're seeing, we must address the many contributing factors to that violence.”

A second young child has died in the care of a couple who was first sentenced to probation in 2009 after their 2-year-old died of pneumonia. Herbert and Catherine Schaible are fundamentalist Christians who believe in prayer over modern medicine. Now their 8-month-old son has died. It is not clear when or how the boy died, but police are not calling it suspicious at this time. Authorities were alerted by the funeral home; an official cause of death is pending an autopsy. The Schaibles were convicted by a jury in 2010 of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment in the death of their 2-year-old son Kent and sentenced to 10 years of probation. Part of the sentence required them to arrange for medical exams for their seven other children and if they become ill to consult a doctor and follow the doctor's recommendations. Prosecutor's argued that Kent could have lived with basic medical care. The defense argued that they were targeted for their fundamentalist beliefs.

Runners in the Philadelphia area have been joining together en masse this past week to show support for the victims, families, and the entire city of Boston in the wake of the bombings during the Boston Marathon this past Monday. Runners from various running groups gathered together on Thursday night for a massive city-wide group run starting from City Hall. Hundreds of runners turned out for the event. The next major running event in Philadelphia is the 10-mile Broad Street Run on May 5th. Organizers have already been reevaluating security protocols ahead of the 1000's of runner's and spectators expected for the race. To show support for the events in Boston a Facebook group has been started asking runners to wear 'red sox' (socks) during the race.
