Mumia Abu-Jamal Death Sentence Revisited

Philadelphia's District Attorney will ask the US Supreme Court to reconsider the sentencing of convicted death row murderer Mumia Abu-Jamal after the Third Circuit Court upheld its previous decision. Abu-Jamal received the death sentence for the 1981 execution style murder of Philadelphia Police Officer, Daniel Faulkner. But Abu-Jamal has not been executed because of a debate as to whether the jury was given proper sentencing instructions. Now a new jury will be assembled to determine whether Abu-Jamal spends the rest of his life in jail or is executed.

Maureen Faulkner, the widow of the victim has endured 30 years since her husband was killed while his murderer lives. Given the choice to drop the enforcement of the death penalty and let Abu-Jamal die in prison, Maureen Faulkner requested that Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams pursue the death penalty.

According to Williams, Maureen Faulkner "believes that the court again is being intellectually dishonest." She also believes "If the courts don't believe there should be a death penalty, they should just say that," he said.

Maureen Faulkner has been vicimized through this 30 year ordeal. It may be that the only outcome that will bring closure for her is the execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal.
