Driver in Fatal Crash had 5 DUIs; Closing Arguments in Kermit Gosnell Case

The driver involved in a fatal crash in Chester County on Friday night has had five previous DUI arrests. Police say 49-year-old Robert Landis of West Chester was travelling at a high rate of speed in his pick-up truck when he turned into 24-year-old Liam Crowley riding on a motorcycle. The accident happened at 10:28 p.m. near Route 202 and Stanton Avenue in Westtown Township. Crowley was taken to Paoli Hospital with serious injuries and died on Sunday night. Landis has a long history of DUI arrests going back to 1997. He was arrested at the scene of the crash for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance, driving while operating privileges are suspended or revoked for DUI, and other traffic offenses. They are waiting for toxicology results to officially charge Landis but he was driving on a suspended license and is being held on a parol violation. Landis was sentenced to 18 – 36 months four years ago for a DUI case.

The closing arguments were heard on Monday in the murder trial against Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell. Defense attorney Jack McMahon did not put forth a defense in this trial, meaning he called no witnesses and presented no evidence, and only had today to sum up his case. In his closing arguments he told the jury that Gosnell has been the victim of an “elitist, racist prosecution.” He said that the clinic was not a “house of horrors” and the Gosnell “provided a service to the community.” Most crucial to insert reasonable doubt, he needs the jury to believe that there was no "scientific evidence" the babies were alive when their necks were snipped. Philadelphia Assistant District Attorney Ed Cameron also presented his closing arguments to the jury this afternoon. He reviewed the grisly testimony of the 54 witnesses and the various charges. He asked Gosnell, "Are you human?" The jury could be charged with the case on Tuesday.
