Grease Closes I-76, Cab Driver Shot and Killed, Little League Disrupted by Gun Debate

A tractor trailer carrying shortening crashed on the Schuylkill Expressway last night dumping its load of cooking lard on the road. The slippery, greasy mess closed Route 76 westbound lanes between 30th Street and 676. Road crews dumped sand on the lard, but mixed with the morning rain, conditions were treacherous and difficult to clean up.

A cab driver was shot and killed last night in West Philadelphia when a would-be fare pulled a gun on him. It happened on the 6000 block of Walnut when a man hailed a cab and pulled a gun to rob the cabbie. The driver tried to speed away and the gunman fired several shots at the car. One bullet hit the cab driver, killing him. No arrest yet.

Hundreds of Little Leaguers in Bucks County are caught in the middle of the gun-rights debate. Competing gun rallies are scheduled on the fields they use for games on Saturday at Williamson Park in Morrisville. State police suggested 20 games be cancelled or moved. Both sides of the debate will be represented with some gun rights advocates planning to carry their legal firearms to the rally.

Sports
The Phillies are trying to sweep the Giants this afternoon in San Francisco.

Weather
Scattered thunderstorms today. 73 in Center City.
