Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter signed legislation today that is some of the most comprehensive in the nation in assuring equal rights for the city's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population. The bill makes Philadelphia the first large city in the United States to offer tax credits to businesses that extend health benefits to partners of LGBT employee's and their children equal to what is already provided to heterosexual couples. It also offers tax credits to businesses that offer transgender specific health benefits. All city owned buildings will also be required to have gender neutral bathrooms.

The Annual “Welcome America” 4th of July Celebration in Philadelphia was announced today. The festivities in the birthplace of independence will take place from July 1st to July 7th. Mayor Nutter was on hand to announce the performers for this year's “4th of July Jam” free concert on the Art Museum steps and Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The event is hosted every year by The Roots. Joining them will be Demi Lovato; John Mayer; Ne-Yo; North Philly’s own Jill Scott; Grace Potter; and Ben Taylor, son of Carly Simon and James Taylor. Throughout the week there will be other festivities in the cradle of liberty including Taste of Philadelphia, WaWa Hoagie Day, and Penn's Landing Fireworks. Last year, Camden, NJ set a record with 67 murders. It's no wonder it's America's deadliest city per capita. 2013 is shaping up to be no different. Late last night the total through May 9th was pushed to 17 with two more murders. That is the same exact number to the date as 2012. James Ball, 33, of Haddon Heights, who was shot at about 1:15 a.m. on the 1100 block of Sheridan Street. Faird George, 24, of Camden was found on the 500 block of Erie Street. He died from multiple bullet wounds at Cooper Medical Center. Last year, the lawn in front of Camden's City Hall began to fill with over 700 white crosses of those murdered in the city placed there by STOP - Stop Trauma On People, an anti-violence group.
