SRC Votes 4 - 1 on New Budget, Cigarette Van $23k Theft, Bear Caught In Delran, NJ

The School Reform Commission voted 4-1 Thursday night, adopting a stripped-down budget that would eliminate art, music and counselors next year. Local philanthropists are saying this would have a negative impact far beyond the classroom. Without an influx or city or state cash, a spokesman says “thousands” of school district layoff notices would begin going out in early June.

Police say $23,000 was stolen from a cigarette delivery van by two male suspects in West Oak Lane Thursday afternoon. The incident happened at a Gulf gas station on the 7100 block of Ogontz Avenue. Philadelphia Police say the two men fled in a white work van and were last seen driving towards the 7200 block of Ogontz Avenue.

A 350-pound black bear was located in an area where there have been several sightings over the past week and was removed from a tree after a nearly four hour standoff with emergency personnel Thursday morning. Two tranquilizers had been used to help remove it from the tree. The bear finally fell to the ground below landing in a safety net at about 9:30 a.m.
