Girard College Drops High School, Lautenberg's Seat?, Mega Millions Ticket Sold In Vineland

Girard College has announced plans to end its residential program and drop its high school in an effort to stay financially afloat. Girard College is seeking the okay to operate as a first-through-eighth-grade day school, instead of the one-through-twelve residential school it is now. Joe Martz, the executive director of the Board of City Trusts, which oversees the school, says recession losses to the trust that subsidizes the school, and rising infrastructure costs are to blame. School officials say they’ll try to place the affected students at the Hershey School, or other private or public schools.

Gov. Chris Christie is perhaps the nation’s highest-profile Republican — but that’s no guarantee the seat held by the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg will switch to GOP hands. Christie has two key decisions: Whom to appoint to fill the seat in the short term, and when to let voters have their say on who will fill it until the term expires in January 2015. There are layers of political calculations involved, along with possible legal complications. With Lautenberg’s death, the Senate now has 52 Democrats, 45 Republicans and two independents who caucus with the Democrats.

New Jersey lottery officials say a Mega Millions ticket that’s worth $30 million was sold at a store in southern New Jersey. But the ticket holder has not yet claimed their prize. Carole Hedinger, the lottery’s executive director, says the sole winning ticket for last Friday’s drawing was sold at the Vineland Truck Stop in Buena. The retailer will earn a $30,000 bonus for selling the ticket, which matched the five winning numbers and the Mega Ball.

Weather, June 4

Showers ending tonight. Low 56.

Tuesday: Sunny. High 77 in Center City.
