Lautenberg Funeral Services, Supreme Court DNA Swab Division, Pennypack Creek Rescue

Funeral services for U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg will be held Wednesday at a New York City synagogue. The 89-year-old Lautenberg, a multimillionaire businessman and the last World War II veteran remaining in the Senate, died early Monday at a New York hospital after suffering complications from viral pneumonia. The funeral is planned for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Park Avenue Synagogue in Manhattan.

A sharply divided Supreme Court on Monday cleared the way for police to take a DNA swab from anyone they arrest for a serious crime, endorsing a practice now followed by more than half the states as well as the federal government. Twenty-eight states and the federal government now take DNA swabs after arrests. All 50 states and the federal government take cheek swabs from convicted criminals to check against federal and state databanks, with the court’s blessing. The fight at the Supreme Court was over whether that DNA collection could come before conviction and without a judge issuing a warrant.

Two children were rescued from the Pennypack Creek in Northeast Philadelphia on Monday evening. A 13-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy were attempting to wade across the creek. They managed to become stranded, and grabbed on to a rock. The two victims were taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children for evaluation. The children were not seriously hurt.
