NJ Coyote Sightings, Philadelphia Cigarette Tax, New SPCA HUP Program

New Jersey health officials are advising residents of coyote sightings in Monmouth County. The Monmouth County Regional Health Commission says the sightings have occurred in the central coastal areas of the county. The sightings have not been localized within any specific neighborhood. The commission says coyotes are naturally wary of humans, but their behavior changes if given access to human food and garbage.

Philadelphia City Council leaders say they expect to provide more than the $60-million increase requested by the school district, even without a liquor-by-the-drink tax hike. The school district asked for an additional $60 million from the city, but Council president Darrell Clarke says the city expects to be doing even more, provide $74 million through a cigarette tax hike and more aggressive collection of real estate taxes.

The Pennsylvania SPCA and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) are joining forces for a new program that is aimed at boosting morale and reducing stress among hospital workers. These are therapy dogs of sorts for the caregivers who deal with high-stress situations every day and even experience the trauma of losing a patient from time to time. In this monthly program, hospital workers can take a few minutes to reduce stress by participating in the “Pet a Pooch” program. And, SPCA officials hope, a dog who visits the hospital may eventually find a home with one of the workers.
