Carrero Sentenced Up to 46 Years, Bill Clinton NCC Speech, NJ Medical Marijuana for Kids

A man has been sentenced to 23 to 46 years in the strangulation murder of his girlfriend in eastern Pennsylvania last year. Thirty-four-year-old Edwin Carrero II of Pottstown was sentenced Monday in Montgomery County Court. He pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and theft in February, a year after 31-year-old Alicia Schmidt was killed in her Pottstown home.

Former President Bill Clinton will deliver a lunchtime speech today at the National Constitution Center. This will be his first visit there in more than 12 years. This time, he’ll deliver the keynote address at a private event organized by the State Budget Crisis Task Force, a group that works to find solutions to the fiscal problems states are facing in a time of shrinking budgets and revenues.

New Jersey lawmakers have advanced a bill that would make it easier for children with certain medical conditions to have access to medical marijuana. The measure now goes before Gov. Chris Christie. It cleared the state Assembly earlier Monday. Proponents say the bill’s aim is to bring relief to children with severe illnesses. It would eliminate the need for written consent from a pediatrician and a psychiatrist for juveniles to be eligible.

Weather, June 25

Mostly Sunny. High 94 in Center City.
