PA Governor Corbett Philadelphia School Bailout, June Rain Record, Worst Charities in America

Just before the midnight deadline, Governor Corbett and state lawmakers agreed to throw a lifeline to the Philadelphia School District with a $140 million bailout package. $30 million will come from tax collections, $45 million will come from funds that would have been paid back to the federal government, and $16 million is part of the new state budget. Schools are still well short of what they need to fill the $300 million deficit.

June 2013 has gone into the books as the wettest on record in Philadelphia. On June 29th the official total rainfall for the month reached 10.11 inches, beating the former record of 10.06 inches measured in 1938. Is all the rain behind us? I'm afraid not. Today is July 1st. We woke up to rain and flash flood watches in the forecast.

According to a new report of the worst charities in America, five of them are in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Center for Investigative Reporting, the Tampa Bay Times and CNN compiled a list of charities who they claim spend too much on administrative costs and telemarketing, and not enough on the groups they are supposed to be helping. Listed are the Harrisburg-based American Foundation for Children with AIDS, Hershey-based Children's Cancer Recovery Fund, Lancaster-based Survivors and Victims Empowered, and the Port Treverton-based Veterans Fund. It also included the National Police Defense Fund of Morganville, N.J.

Weather
Heavy thunderstorms off and on today with flooding in some areas. 81 in Center City.
