All Star Candidate Chase Utley Reports Progress

This week we got an indication from manager, Charlie Manuel and Chase Utley himself that the All Star second baseman may be getting back to live action soon. That's welcome news for many fans who are already voting for him to play in this year's All Star Game.

According to Manuel, “It might be time to let him go somewhere, like Clearwater or something and start getting into a broader, bigger routine.”

Utley followed with “I think we’re making some progress. We’ll have to see how tomorrow goes and go from there.”

Utley has played in two simulated games in three days at Citizens Bank Park. In Clearwater, Utley would face live pitching from the Phillies’ minor league prospects.

While there is still no specific timetable for his return, Chase Utley was placed on the official All Star Ballot by Major League Baseball. This is not unusual for Utley who has been the starting second baseman for the National League All Stars for the past five years. But in 2011 he hasn't played a game yet.

Utley has been gradually rehabbing patellar tendinitis in his right knee, and would like to be playing by the All-Star break.

Chase Utley has been a top vote getter in All Star balloting in prior years. Because of his popularity, he is likely to get plenty of votes this year, even without playing. He could conceivably win a spot on the All Star team without playing in a game.

The hope is that Chase Utley will be back in May, and play All Star caliber baseball through the break. That's plenty of time to justify his selection to the All Star team.
