The great lead singer of the Shirelles, Shirley Alston Reeves, appeared on July 6th at the Lou Booth Amphitheater in North Wildwood. All 500 seats of the venue were filled with another 100 or so folks standing to see the performance.

Ms. Reeves has the ability to immediately connect with her audience. She was funny, personal, and very interactive. She got folks up dancing and singing for most of the show. Her voice was picture perfect and the back up singers complimented her style and range. I sat next to the girlfriend of the lead guitar player. She described Shirley as generous, gracious and very appreciative.

The performance started with a tribute to girl groups of the 60's. The Shirelles are credited with being trail blazers for the large number of acts that were to follow. They covered songs by The Crystals, The Chiffons, The Dixie Cups and The Ronettes. They also covered songs by The Drifters and The Spinners. She and her band did a fine job and the audience responded with enthusiastic applause.

Shirley and the Shirelles have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Rolling Stone has picked them as one of the top 100 acts of all time. Rolling Stone also picked two of their songs as the greatest songs of all time. Shirley and her group walked folks down Memory Lane with ; “Tonight's the Night,” ”Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” Dedicated to the One I Love,” Soldier Boy,” and she brought the house down with “ Baby It's You.”

I brought a couple of albums to, hopefully, get signed. I was not disappointed! At the end of the show, I approached the stage and held up my albums. She smiled and motioned to the stage exit. I met her and she signed my albums, and I asked her what she would like her fans to know. She said, “ Seeing a full theater and folks having fun is why at 72 I keep going, I love to perform.”
