Roosevelt Boulevard Study, Trayvon Martin's Mom in Philadelphia, Emancipation Procalmation Display

One week after a mother and three children died while crossing Roosevelt Boulevard on foot, city officials say they're going to study whether a pedestrian-only crossing signal should be installed at that location. Samara Banks and three children were struck and killed by what police say were drag racers on the Boulevard near Second Street in Feltonville. Acting Streets Commissioner David Perri says they’re now going to study whether a signal there would help.

The mother of slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will speak in Philadelphia this week at the National Urban League’s annual conference. Civil rights and voting rights are two major topics of the four-day event, which begins Wednesday. About 6,000 participants are expected. Holder will talk Thursday about a recent Supreme Court ruling that struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, will speak Friday. She supports an investigation into whether her son’s killer could be charged under federal civil rights laws.

To mark the 150th Anniversary of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, the Urban League of Philadelphia showed off an original copy of the document during a special ceremony at the National Constitution Center Monday evening. The event kicked off the 2013 National Urban League Conference. The highlight of the ceremony was a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation by Reverend Marshall Mitchell of Salem Baptist Church in Jenkintown. The original copy was one of 48 made here in Philadelphia, signed by President Lincoln, and then sent to the states paving the way for the 13th Amendment. The original copy of the Emancipation Proclamation will be on display at the National Constitution Center through mid-September.
