Ex-Penn State Spanier Held for Trial, Curley, Shultz; Daly Explosion, Cigarette is Speculation

Former Pennsylvania State University president Graham Spanier, Athletic Director Tim Curley and Vice President Gary Schultz were ordered held for trial Tuesday charged with covering up reports of child abuse and molestation by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. In their grand jury testimony in 2011 the three administrators expressed having little to no knowledge of a 1998 investigation into Jerry Sandusky. They also claimed to be unaware of the gravity of a 2001 incident witnessed by graduate assistant Mike McQueary. McQueary testified on Monday that he told Joe Paterno, Curley, and Schultz that he saw Sandusky rape a boy in the showers. A forensic investigator also presented e-mails from 1998 and 2001 between the three discussing the incidents. This was enough evidence to move forward in the case.

The city is still trying to determine the cause the the explosion that led to the collapse of a row home in South Philadelphia yesterday morning. Investigators have been unable to interview the injured worker because he is still in critical condition. Mayor Nutter says that any rumor that says the worker's lit cigarette caused the explosion would be “pure speculation.” They are still trying to determine if gas was leaking at the time, where it was, and the exact cause of ignition. All work at that site requiring permits had been completed last Friday, only cosmetic work would have been being done inside at this time.
