Philadelphia Orchestra delivers first-rate performances at the Mann Center

In the past few weeks, the Mann Center has been the home for the Philadelphia Orchestra. Recent performances have featured the music from Fantasia, The Legend of Zelda, and Symphonic Sports-tacular - a recent partnership with Philadelphia sports teams which featured famous moments from Philadelphia sports history set to well known classical favorites.

But last week's line-up saw a return to more traditional classical repertoire.

Wednesday's performance, From Russian Romance to Revolution, featured the works of three influential Russian composers, Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff, and Rimsky-Korsakov.

Each piece was chosen as a marker of different developments in the evolution of classical music, from Rimsky-Korsakov in the 1880s to Stravinsky in the 1910s and Rachmaninoff in the 1930s. The performance consisted of three major works:

Rimsky-Korsakov - Russian Easter Overture
Rachmaninoff - Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring

Pianist Di Wu, a Curtis graduate, accompanied the Orchestra in a beautiful performance of the Rachmaninoff piece.

Thursday Night's performance featured Ukrainian Pianist Vadym Kholodenko, winner of the Fourteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. In honor of the late Pianist Van Cliburn, who died last year, the show was named as a tribute to him. The young Kholodenko was fantastic in his performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor. In addition, the night’s program featured many other works that were dear to the late Cliburn.

Wagner - Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg
Tchaikovsky - Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor
Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C minor
Strauss - Suite from Der Rosenkavalier
