U.S Enbassy Closings, PHL Airport Travel Unaffected, 2nd Street Festival

The U.S. State Department announced it will extend the closures of almost two dozen embassies and consulates, prompted by an uncovered al Qaeda plot, through Saturday due to an "abundance of caution." Officials picked up clues into the al Qaeda operation against diplomatic posts in the Middle East and other Muslim countries over the weekend. House Homeland Security Chairman called it "one of the most specific and credible threats I've seen, perhaps since 9/11."

A world-wide terror alert is in effect, prompting the closure of over 20 embassies and consulates. Despite the possible terror plot linked to Al-Qaeda, many Americans are still traveling overseas. Even though the global travel advisory is in effect, passengers are unlikely to see any signs of additional security. In fact, travel in and out of Philadelphia International Airport is unaffected. The state department is urging travellers to sign up for the STEP program. That stands for Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. Those who enroll receive updated security information.

Thousands of people flocked to the fifth annual 2nd Street festival in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties section on Sunday. This is a mid-summer carnival on a northern stretch of the city, from Germantown to Green , though instead of mummers and string bands, think hipsters and indie folk.
One of the great things about Philadelphia during the summer is that pretty much every week there’s some event to go to and something like this where you can connect with your community and just have a good time.

Weather, August 5

Mostly Sunny. High 79 in Center City.
