NJ Powerball Winners, Philly Schools May Not Open, Food Stamp Program Expiring

Sixteen workers in Ocean County, New Jersey hold one of the winning Powerball tickets. The winning group work for Ocean County in vehicle maintenance and bought their ticket at an Acme in Little Egg Harbor. Three tickets matched the winning Powerball numbers splitting the $448 million jackpot. The Acme has been presented with a check for $30,000 for selling a winning ticket.

Philadelphia School Superintendent, William R. Hite says schools may not open on time if $50 million is not found to cover operational costs by August 16th. All 218 schools are affected as Hite says without crucial staff members, schools cannot function properly. Mayor Nutter wants City Council to approve a 1% sales tax hike and take a $50 million loan for the schools.

Food stamp benefits are scheduled to be cut and Pennsylvania will lose about $200 million. Nearly 1.8 million PA residents will see their food stamp benefits reduced in the Fall. A family of four will see a reduction of about $36 per month. The 2009 stimulus program boosting food stamps expires November 1st and will affect 43 million Americans,
