The Chad and Jeremy Concert at the Cape May Convention Center

On Monday evening August 5th I jumped into my way back machine to have a nostalgic trip back to the 60's. The Chad and Jeremy concert at the Cape May Convention Center was a compilation of music, stories, comedy and the display of the friendship of the performers.

If you have not attend an event at the Cape May Convention Center you are missing a real treat. Cape May itself is beautiful and the Convention Center compliments the laided-back atmosphere of this historic seaside resort. The Convention Center is about 3 years old with fine acoustics, about 1000 comfortable seats, and has a friendly and accommodating staff.

Chad Stuart and Jeremy Clyde met in art school in London and became fast friends and that prompted them to start to sing, write and perform together. There initial success was fast in both Britain and America, however, they were more successful in America. They hit the charts with a series of top 20 songs including; “Yesterday’s Gone,” “Summer Song,” and “Willow Weep for Me.” They appeared on numerous TV shows. Their chemistry was apparent on appearances on Batman, The Patty Duke Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show. Unfortunately, because of a changing music scene, troubles with record labels, and different career ambitions, they disbanded in 1969 and did not reunite again until a brief tour in 1986. A reissue of their early work in 2000 sparked a renewed interest in their music and they have been touring since.

They took the stage to a very enthusiastic reaction from the audience. From what I could see, it appeared to be close to a sell out. From the start they played off of each other in the vain of the Smothers Brothers. A British version of the Smothers Brothers with Chad being the comic and Jeremy being the set up or straight guy. The ease of their banter and the good-natured barbs they exchanged worked well and demonstrated their ongoing friendship.

The set consisted of:

“Hey Baby”
“Before & After”
“The Water Is Wide”
“Transatlantic Trauma”
“All the Harvests”
“Yesterday's Gone”
“Willow Weep for Me”
“Dog House Blues”
“I'll Be Back Again”
“Purple Haze”
“Distant Shores”
“Take Out the Insurance For Me”
“You Are She”
“Dragon Wanted”
“Long Ago and Far Away”
“Progress”
“Zanzibar Sunset”
“ A Summer Song”

After the concert Chad and Jeremy met with their fans, signed all sorts of stuff folks brought, took pictures and carried on very heartfelt conversations. I had the opportunity to get my albums signed and ask them a few questions. When asked what they have learned along the way it was, 'enjoy the moment' and 'real friendships endure.' Taking with other fans during the meet and greet was fun and, to a person, all enjoyed their music, their comedy and the journey back to simpler time. JoeS
