Killed Teachers Were Expecting, Critical Officer May Lose Kidney, Gov Corbett Refuses Grant

The two married Philadelphia school teachers killed this weekend in North Carolina, were expecting a baby. William and Jamie Reid were married just three months ago and Jamie was pregnant with ultrasound photos in purse when the driver of the hired car taking them to the airport hit a tree. Will Reid was a math teacher for People to People charter school and Jamie taught writing and literature at Harrity Elementary.

The Philadelphia police officer shot yesterday is still in critical condition today and will likely lose a kidney. Officer Ed Davies was shot in the stomach when a man shoved a stolen handgun up under Davies' bullet-proof vest and pulled the trigger. The shooter, 31 year old Eric Torres has been arrested and a search of his home turned up another illegal gun and heroin packaged for sale.

Governor Corbett has refused a request to release $45 million in state funds to the Philadelphia School District. Corbett stuck to the letter of the law saying that until the teachers’ union signs a contract that includes significant fiscal savings and academic reforms, Philly schools will not get the money.

Sports
The Phillies are in Atlanta with the Braves tonight.

Weather
