FBI raids Philly Sheriff; Nutter to borrow $50M for schools; 76ers Owner Harris Buys Nj Devils

The FBI raided the Philadelphia Sheriff's offices this morning. Agents arrived at the offices at 100 S. Broad around 9:00 am and served a subpoena and executive search warrants as part of an ongoing investigation begun in previous administrations. Agents were seen leaving the building with files and boxed of paperwork. No one was arrested and the Sheriff's department was fully cooperative. Both the FBI and the Sheriff's department are not commenting on the matter at this time, but it is believed the investigation is into real estate dealings in that office.

Mayor Nutter announced today that he plans to borrow $50 million for the Philadelphia School District, the day before Superintendent William Hite's emergency deadline to delay the start of school. “I will not risk a catastrophe — we will avoid this disaster,” the mayor said this morning. “I am committing to our students, our parents, our citizens today that schools are going to open on time and safely on September 9th.” Nutter still needs to get approval from City Council to extend the 1 percent sales tax increase past the end of year to cover the costs of the loan otherwise it will have to come from the general fund. City Council President Darrell Clarke promptly announced a different plan offering the district the money in exchange for unused real estate. No matter the plan taken, it seems for now that the schools have passed this latest hurdle.

Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris is the new owner of the New Jersey Devils. Harris is the founder of one of the world's largest private equity firms. His group paid Jeff Vanderbeek $320 million for the rights to the Devils and their lease to the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. Vanderbeek will remain with the Devils as a senior advisor. Rumors surrounding the future of the Sixers home sprung up with word of this deal. Harris leases space at Wells Fargo Center for the 76ers from Comcast Spectacor who also own rival NHL Flyers. When asked the question, Harris definitvely said, “The Sixers are staying in Philly.” The Devils won the Stanley Cup in 1995, 2000 and 2003, and won the Eastern Conference championships in 2001 and 2012. They moved to New Jersey in 1982 from Colorado. They played at the Meadowlands before moving to Newark in 2007.

Tonight, Clear and cool, temperatures in the low 70s this evening
