Review: Jay and Americans Concert on Monday August 19th at the Ocean City Music Pier

The Jay and the Americans concert at the Ocean City Music Pier was right on the number. If you were there for a night of music nostalgia, interesting stories about their careers, and a lot of good natured kidding around, you were at the right place. The back up band, the US Band, did a bang up job. Can Jay and the Americans still sing and can Jay the 3rd hit those nose bleed notes? On all questions the answer is a resounding , yes!

They opened with "Only in America" to an appreciative audience with loud applause. They introduced the band and addressed the 3 Jay question. They told the story of the band including how they bought the name of the band back from Jay 2, Jay Black, and that Jay 1 only sang on one song “She Cried.” They talked about working with Roy Orbison and performed “Crying” an Orbison standard and huge hit for both. Interestingly enough, Jay and the Americans were the start to the careers of Steely Dan giants Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. They employed the duo in their touring band and encouraged them as song writers, boy were they right. They did “Rillin' In the Years” and to my surprise did it more than justice.

They also covered The Ronettes “Walking in the Rain” and “Be My Baby,” as well as “ Save the Last Dance for Me,” a huge hit for The Drifters and Ben E King. These songs were performed because Jay and the Americans toured with, admired and told stories about meeting these great artists.

The Jay and the Americans songs performed were;

“Only in America”
“Let's Lock the Door (And Throw Away the Key)”
“She Cried”
“Sunday and Me”
“Tonight”
“Some Enchanted Evening”
“Come a Little Bit Closer”
“This Magic Moment”
“Cara Mia”
“Wisdom of a Fool”

They finished the show by doing a reprise of “ Cara Mia.” If anyone had a doubt about the ability of Jay Reincke to hit those breath taking notes, he dispelled them and then some. Sandy Deanne, Jay Reincke, Marty Sanders and Howie Kane proved that talent, determination and a positive attitude can overcome all of the challenges the music industry throws at artists. Jay and the Americans stayed for a good hour after the performance signing stuff, taking pictures and talking with their fans. I bought a signed CD and also got my album signed. The concert was a sell out. I talked with a large group of folks before and after the concert, all were both pleased and amazed by the performance before and after the show. Joe S
