Teachers Union Negotiates, New Hope Mayor Declines Gay Marriage, Sarah Murnaghan Is Home

The Philadelphia teachers union is ready to make some concessions in contract talks with the school district. President of the Federation of Teachers Jerry Jordan says he will recommend accepting a pay freeze and agree to have teachers begin making contributions to health care premiums. Jordan says he is interested in getting schools staffed properly so they can open on time.

New Hope’s mayor is taking some heat for refusing to officiate at a same sex marriage in the gay-friendly town. Republican Mayor Larry Keller supports same sex marriage, but he is sworn to uphold the laws of Pennsylvania. Locals are disappointed Keller won’t use the opportunity to continue New Hope’s tradition of acceptance and equality.

Sarah Murnaghan is home in Newtown Square. The 11 year old girl who underwent two double lung transplants came home from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia yesterday after 6 months there. Sarah has Cystic Fibrosis and needed a court order to get an adult lung transplant because donor rules denied her because of her age. Sarah is off oxygen now and will work to regain her strength.
