September 11 Memorial, West Nile Confirmed in Philadelphia, School Violence Declining

September 11th. Twelve years ago today the terrorist attacks on 9/11 remain the worst on United States soil. Ceremonies marking the anniversary are taking place today at Ground Zero in New York and Washington. President Obama is attending a memorial service at the Pentagon. A moment of silence will be observed in Shanksville, PA in memory of the thousands of lives lost that day.

Philadelphia has its first confirmed case of West Nile Virus in 2013. The woman became sick on July 30th and the disease was confirmed as West Nile this week. She is the fifth confirmed case in Pennsylvania this year to be infected by the disease transmitted to humans by mosquitoes and can cause damage to the brain and spinal cord.

Violent crimes in Philadelphia Schools is declining. According to a report released this week, the number of assaults and other violent incidents reported in city schools dropped 32% last academic year. Also, the number of schools on Pennsylvania’s “dangerous” list dropped from 6 to 2. Superintendent William R. Hite credits school staffs and principals for the improved culture and safety.

The Phillies have the San Diego Padres again tonight.
