Navy Yard Security Raised, Corbett Orders PA Half Staff Flags, Rhee Hosts Temple Town Hall Meeting

The deadly shooting at the Washington Navy Yard has prompted action at local military facilities. At the Naval Support Activity in Northeast Philadelphia, the security is tight and the atmosphere is solemn. It's common to see guards outside of the support center, but now, they are more equipped and more armed. At the Philadelphia Navy Yard in South Philadelphia, a similar scene is playing out.

Governor Tom Corbett has ordered that Pennsylvania flags be lowered to half-staff in honor of the victims of Monday morning’s shooting at the Washington Navy Yard. Earlier today, President Obama ordered all United States flags to be lowered at all government buildings out of respect for the victims. Both the U.S. and Pennsylvania flags shall remain at half-staff until sunset on Friday, September 20th.

Area teachers were invited to a Town Hall meeting at Temple University’s Student Faculty Center Auditorium Monday evening for a discussion on long-term solutions to the ongoing financial crisis surrounding the Philadelphia School District. The event was hosted by the education reform group StudentsFirst, and headlining the panel was Michelle Rhee, who believes the next teachers’ union contract should be one that pays based on teacher performance and takes the emphasis off of seniority.
