Deadly DC Shooting, Philadelphia Teachers Meet Experts, Parent Complain

The shooting at Washington Navy Yard that killed 13 people, including the gunman is the deadliest at a military base since the Fort Hood rampage in 2009 that left 13 dead and 30 wounded. Originally, there was talk of a second gunman, however by the end of day yesterday, it appeared the shooter, 34 year old Aaron Alexis, a former Navy reservist acted alone. Motives are still being investigated.

Philadelphia teachers met with academic experts yesterday to try to improve their schools while funding questions remain unanswered. Teachers and support staff met with national experts from the Washington DC area including the Public School Chancellor, a Magnet School Principal, and a Union president. The discussion centered on methods for improving Philly’s cash strapped situation.

Parents and teachers gathered last night at SEIU District 1201 offices in North Philly to discuss problems and potential solutions in schools. Some classes have 40 students and not enough desks. A lack of hall monitors forced prohibition of bathroom use for 5 hours. Teachers were not permitted to make photocopies. Attendees were urged to vote against lawmakers who ignored funding needs.

Sports
The Phillies host the Miami Marlins again tonight.

Weather
