The Burlap and Bean is for me a new place to enjoy live music. Though it has been an established venue for some time, this was my first but not my last visit, as they say in OZ, “there is no place like close to home.” The venue is on Providence Rd. in the Shops at Springton Pointe. Burlap and Bean is primarily a fine coffee shop, a gathering place and a bakery/restaurant. The coffee and bakery items are just delicious and the atmosphere informal and friendly. On Saturday night, a few friends and I went to drink some coffee, eat some treats and listen to some music. On every level it was just a fun night. You can see their menu and see the upcoming shows at www.burlapandbean.com.

The first act of this double header was SHEL. This is a group of four sisters who perform a fusions of folk, rock and irish folk music in a unusual and interesting way. They hail form Fort Collins and are life long musicians with classical training. Their musical presentation was flawless, powerful, emotional and filled with joy. They played off of each other and used every bit of the small stage to engage each other and the appreciative audience. With Sarah on violin, Hannah on keyboards, Eva on mandolin and lead vocals and Liza on percussion, they produce a cornucopia of highly textured musical treats for the ears and heart.

They have a self titled album, SHEL, it was the main ingredient of their performance. I listened to most of the cuts and really enjoyed hearing the live versions of “Freckles,” “Was the Circus,” “Don't Look Back,” Lost at Sea,” and their cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Gallows Pole.” Their cover was my favorite of the set. Who knew that a folksy group could nail Led Zeppelin! I had an opportunity to speak to a couple of members of the band and found them to be very dedicated to and immersed in their art. They grew up listening to the Beatles, Stones, Sting and yes Led Zeppelin. Today they really enjoy The Civil Wars. You can buy their album and follow them on their site www.shelmusic.com. If you get the opportunity give them a look and listen, you will not be disappointed.

The second act was The Sea The Sea. A duo composed of Chuck e. Costa and Mira Stanley who make some interesting and beautiful tunes. Chuck has a distinctive very high and pleasing voice. His style and sound is hard to put into a box. As either a lead or back up vocalist, his understated style gets and holds your attention. Mira has a strong voice that compliments Chuck. Her style is a mixture of strong country, folk and jazz. They both play the guitar and banjo and Mira also plays percussion in both a traditional way on a drum and cymbal and in an unusual way with her feet/boots on a piece of plywood. They are eclectic and wonderfully do not fit into any musical box.

I thought “Birds That Fly” had a story of freedom and vision that had a strong appeal to me. “Restless Heart,” form their new album is highly textured cut with multiple layers that sounds like three or four singers. They perform with emotion and exuberance that is projected to the audience and given back. They performed for about an hour and I remember I also thought that “The Boat Song,” and “No Love Today” hit the mark with great lyrics and a fine melody. I wish they had performed the Skiter Davis song, “The End of the World.” They do a spot on version that can bring a tear to the eye. Their album, Are We Love We Are Love can be purchased form their website www.theseathesea.com.

It was exciting to find a venue fifteen minutes from my door that offers top notch performers in a friendly and intimate setting and it never hurts to serve superb coffee and food...
