Penumbral Lunar Eclipse in Philadelphia Tonight

Tonight's (Oct 18th) full moon will pass through part of the Earth's shadow producing a partial lunar eclipse that should be viewable to most of us in the Philadelphia area. This type of eclipse is called a penumbral lunar eclipse because the moon passes through the Earth's outer shadow called the penumbra. The shading of a penumbral lunar eclipse can be subtle and hard to see as opposed to a umbral eclipse which is a dark shadow that blocks out all of the moon's reflected light.

The lunar eclipse should be visible for a period of four hours with the deepest shadow occurring at 7:50 pm EDT. At that point the Earth's shadow should cover approximately 76.5 percent of the moon's disk. The weather in Philadelphia calls for clear skies tonight at moon rise which will have right after sunset. The best place to see the eclipse in Philadelphia would be anywhere with a view of the rising moon. You don't need any special equipment, it can be seen with the naked eye.

If you can't get a chance to watch the moon tonight or live in an area that won't see the eclipse the Slooh Space Camera will be hosting live video coverage of the ecplise.
