Sandy Anniversary, Philadelphia Teacher Shuffling, Corbett's Lottery Plan Under Fire

One year ago today, Hurricane Sandy made landfall on the Jersey Shore. Today, many homeowners and businesses are still not back on their feet. The disbursement of financial aid to victims has been slow and the cost of flood insurance has gone up. Some homeowners are forced to go to the expense of raising their homes up to meet new construction height requirements.

The Philadelphia School District is adjusting to the budget crisis. This year there has been a 70% increase in teacher shuffling, an effort to move teachers to areas of need and to keep classroom sizes down – 30 for the lower grades and 33 in higher grades. To date, 139 teachers have been moved to new schools.

There are calls for Governor Corbett to back off the idea of privatizing Pennsylvania’s Lottery. State Treasurer Rob McCord claims the administration has spent $3.5 million on legal fees and consultants, calling the effort “misguided.” Corbett wants to bring in British firm Camelot Global Services to run the lottery.
