Lake Harmony Home Explosion, Route 30 Accident Kills One, PA Charter School Law

Authorities say one person is dead after a house explosion and fire in northeastern Pennsylvania. It happened Monday afternoon in a home at the Lake Harmony Estates development in Kidder Township, Carbon County. Investigators believe a couple and a worker were inside the home at the time of the blast. An excavation crew and rescue dogs were brought in to search through the rubble.

A 69-year-old man has died and six others were injured in an accident in Galloway, Atlantic County. The accident, involving an overturned tractor trailer and three other vehicles , happened on Route 30 and Pomona Road Monday morning. Several people had to be rescued from their vehicles, and two medical helicopters also responded to the scene. Route 30 was closed for most of the day.

A bill to overhaul Pennsylvania’s charter school law would gut local control of the alternative schools by eliminating enrollment caps and giving universities the power to authorize new charters, opponents said Monday. The criticism from the Education Law Center comes after a state Senate committee recently voted to advance the legislation, which supporters say will provide greater accountability and stronger standards for charter schools.
