Christie Re-Elected, Williams and Butkovitz Re-Elected, Archdiocese Pension Freeze

Gov. Chris Christie was re-elected with ease Tuesday, demonstrating the kind of broad, bipartisan appeal that will serve as his opening argument should he seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. Christie has been very busy for past week, making more than 90 stops over the last seven days. Christie was expected to become the first Republican in a quarter-century to receive more than 50 percent of the New Jersey vote

Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams and Controller Alan Butkovitz defeated their Republican challengers in a sign of the power of incumbency and a nearly 7-1 Democratic edge in citywide voter registration. Williams beat GOP challenger Daniel Alvarez, a former assistant district attorney, while Butkovitz won against Republican Terry Tracy, a retail business manager.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is freezing the pension plan for its lay employees, citing a need to cut costs. Active employees will be moved into a defined contribution plan but won’t lose benefits they’ve already earned. Pensions for retirees won’t change. A study this summer found the pension plan had a shortfall of about $150 million.
